Dr. Erica Koch graduated from Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine in 2006. Upon graduation, she entered an intense high case load internship program at Hagyard Equine Medical Center, in Lexington, KY, where she was immersed in the thoroughbred racehorse industry. She was fortunate to not only learn from some incredible veterinarians, but also to work with some famous equine athletes. Upon completion of her internship at Hagyards, Dr. Koch entered private practice in an equine ambulatory setting in southern New Hampshire. During her time in New Hampshire, she decided to pursue further training in a Sports Medicine/ Ambulatory Equine Residency program at the University of Pennsylvania, New Bolton Center, which Dr. Koch began in 2008. During her time at UPenn, Dr. Koch gained valuable experience working with many different disciplines including dressage, eventing, hunter jumpers, racing thoroughbreds and standardbreds, western performance horses and the occasional Amish work horse. Once the residency was completed, Dr. Koch decided that she truly enjoyed academia and embraced the concept of ‘See one. Do one. Teach one.’ and accepted a faculty position at the Atlantic Veterinary College in Prince Edward Island, Canada.
During her time in academia she was able to continue her own veterinary education and completed an acupuncture course for veterinarians at Colorado State University, which she now uses as an adjunctive tool in treating her patients. Dr. Koch also participated in a humanitarian trip to Samana in the Dominican Republic, castrating horses and donkeys, vaccinating and deworming, and treating anything possible that the locals brought to the veterinary team. After an amazing three years living and working in Canada, gaining excellent lameness experience from the two standardbred tracks on PEI, and gaining general experience from the other disciplines on the island, Dr. Koch decided to go back to private practice. She accepted an equine ambulatory position focused on sport horse medicine on Long Island in New York. Dr. Koch is also a treating FEI veterinarian and has participated in, as well as hosted a Technical Large Animal Emergency Rescue course.
The culmination of this broad equine veterinary experience prepared Dr. Koch to establish her own practice, Wentworth Equine Veterinary Services, which provides superior veterinary care and products to our equine patients.
